Modern Description: Founded by Athenian colonists on the edge of a fertile plain. The pre-existing city was perhaps called Pedasus. Destroyed by the Persians in 496 BC, during the Ionian revolt. Suffered another destruction in the 1st Mithridatian War (1st century BC). Small-scale excavations are fenced and signposted.
