Modern Description: A city on a rocky hill of white crystalline limestone, on the W bank of the Enipeus, S of Vlochos. Stephanos Byzantinos identified the city, which flourished in the 5th and 4th c., with Homeric Asterion, named for the brilliance of the white rock. Concentric walls of semipolygonal masonry surrounded the acropolis; they were strengthened by numerous towers and had two gates on the S side. (M. H. MCALLISTER)
