Modern Description: On the flat top of Goritsa hill (h. 200 m), at the E edge of the gulf of Volos, large sections of a wall with semicircular towers still stand. It surrounded a fortified Hellenistic settlement, perhaps a military installation of the Macedonians (350-250 BC). Helly has suggested that this is the Magnesian Methone mentioned by Pseudo-Scylax, a refounding after the destruction of Methone in Pieria by Philip II of Macedon. It disappeared during the formation of Demetrias. A cave with rupestral inscription showing rites for Zeus Meilichios.
