Modern Description: (cf. Demetrias)
City in Pelasgiotis and port of Pherae already from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Pagasae is mentioned in the expedition of the Argonauts. It flourished in Archaic times on account of the sanctuary of oracle of Apollo Pagasaios, near the river Xerias. Participated in the synoecism of Demetrias in 293 BC.
Defensive walls with two constructional phases survive. The earlier (first half of 4th century BC) descends from Profitis Ilias hill to the sea and encloses the harbour. 69 of its square towers are preserved. The later, Hellenistic wall (3rd century BC) is associated with the fortification of Demetrias. The city was perhaps abandoned after the synoecism.
