Modern Description: Pefkakia is a coastal locality at the base of the Pagasitic Gulf just opposite the city of Volos. In addition to a Late Neolithic and later settlement mound on the promontory, excavations ongoing from 2008-16 under the local Ephoreia of Antiquities and the University of Thessaly have revealed under Hellenistic occupation levels a substantial Mycenaean presence including shellfish dye extraction and cult practices. Prior excavations ca 200 m WSW had revealed a Hellenistic sanctuary of Kybele as well as more Mycenaean traces.
