Modern Description: Visible across the water from Mytilene are the three islets of Arginusae, off which in 406 BC the Athenians won a naval victory over the Lacedaemonians. The Spartan admiral Kallikratidas was killed and 70 of his ships sunk or captured. The Athenians lost 25 ships and were prevented by the weather from rescuing the crews. For this omission eight of the Athenian commanders in the battle were recalled to Athens, tried, and six of them executed. This drastic action was a factor in the Athenian annihilation at the battle of Aegospotami.
