Modern Description: At 9.5 km from Chora is a right turn for Skyros Airport. Beyond this point another right turn (11.7 km) leads to the ancient site of Markési at the northwestern tip of the island. (It lies inside an active military zone of the Greek Air Force, and is currently out of bounds unless a permit is previously obtained from the military authorities in Athens.) The site was continually inhabited and used from the Early Bronze Age through to Christian times. The remains of an ancient settlement and of rock-cut tombs are in evidence on the promontory. The hill is marked by the church of the Theotokos; beneath this, are the remains of an Early Christian church, which in turn is built over the base of a Classical temple to Poseidon.[?] The dedication to the god of the seas is not surprising given the strategically panoramic position and the busy maritime routes it surveys.
