Modern Description: A small city mentioned from the 5th century BC onwards as a vassal of the Persians and as a member of the 1st Athenian League. It belonged to the territory of Myrina in Hellenistic times.
The oracle of Apollo Gryneios at Gryneum was the religious and political centre of the Aeolis, of special significance for the Aeolians in Asia Minor. The sanctuary was perhaps located on a small peninsula on the marshy shore of Cape Temaşalık Burnu in the Eleatic gulf, 1 km S of the village of Yenişakran. A cemetery with sarcophagi (c. 500 BC) has been excavated in the area as well as a Roman building with a mosaic. Ruins of a probably Early Christian building.
