Modern Description: According to tradition, the earliest of the cities of Aeolis was founded at the time of the Trojan War by the Athenian Menestheus. In Hellenistic times it developed as a port of the kingdom of Pergamon.
The ancient city is located in a marshy area in the estuary of the river Caïcus, 3 km from the village of Zeytindağ. Very few remnants of the Hellenistic defensive wall (3rd century BC) survive on the low acropolis hill. Part of the mighty sea wall (Taş Limanı) and the ancient mole (perhaps 4th century BC) are preserved on the shore of the Elaeatic gulf. Cemeteries with grave tumuli have been found N and S of the city.
