Modern Description: Anaktorion was founded by Corinthians at the end of the 7th century BCE. It participated in the Persian Wars on the Greek side and during the Peloponnesian War it was an ally of Sparta. In 425 the Akarnanians captured the city with the aid of Athens. Subsequently Anaktorion became a member of the Akarnanian Confederacy. Outside the city was the sanctuary of Apollo Aktios.
The ruins of the city are located near Nea Kamarina on the southern coast of the Ambracic gulf. The city's fortification comprises an acropolis (on the hill called Kastri) and two larger enclosures. Gates to the east and west led to Thyrreio and Aktio respectively. Among the city's remains one can still see house ruins, the agora and a harbour at the small gulf of Agios Petros. Outside the fortification part of the cemetery, dating to the 6th cent. B.C. have come to light, with inscribed grave stelai, now in Thyrreio museum.
