Modern Description: The site of the well-preserved Venetian fortress of Mendenitsa (or Voudonitsa) is identified with the ancient city of Pharygae -- an Argeian colony famed for the worship of Pharygaean Hera -- or with ancient Nicaea. Parts of the Classical and Hellenistic defensive wall were used as building material for the Medieval castle (13th century).
