Modern Description: The ruins on Palaiokastro hill, ca 1km. north-northeast of Rigani, 2.7km. from Acheloos river, have been tentatively identified with ancient Mitropoli. The city, a colony of Corinth, dates to the 6th century, a period when Leukas and Anaktorion were also founded by the Corinthians. The fortification is a simple, square peribolos with an original perimeter of 1400m. Only its southern half, ca 650m. has been preserved, incorporating remains of three gates, but no towers.
