Modern Description: The city has been referred to by Thucydides Xenophon and Polybius in their accounts of the wars of the 5th, 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. Probably during the 4th century if not earlier it became a member of the Akarnanian Confederacy. The fortification of ancient Medeon stretches along the slopes of the hills ca. 1km. northeast of Katouna. The fortification encloses a perimeter of 2km., with a separate acropolis on top of Kastraki hill. The general condition of the fortification, constructed in the polygonal system, is rather good and is surrounded by cliffs on all sides. Its date remains uncertain. Within the fortification one can see ruins of houses and two ancient wells. The city's cemetery extends outside the western side of the walls.
