Modern Description: A Venetian/Turkish castle stands on the Agios Georgios hill, above the village Nea Plagia, ca. 20 km. northwest of Vonitsa.
Ruins of a city (at least eight times larger than the area covered by the castle) can be seen scaterred around it. The ancient city comprised an acropolis, which occupied the same spot as the Venetian/Turkish castle. The ancient fortification was built in the polygonal system, includes 11 towers and at least one gate; it dates to the 5th cent. B.C. The city has been identified either with Nerikos or, more probably, Sollion. The perimeter of the enclosure has been estimated at 1,600m. and comprised 11 towers and at least one gate. Within it one can see the remains of various unidentified buildings. The much later fort (Venetian/Turkish) is a much smaller construction (160x90m.) with one circular tower in each of the four corners.
