Modern Description: The first inhabitants of Phocaea were Aeolians. It was colonized later by Ionians who came from Teos and Erythrae or Clazomenae. Phocaea founded important colonies in the W (Elaea / Velia in Italy and Massalia / Marseilles). In the area of the modern gymnasium architectural members from the poros temple of Athena (6th century BC) have been found (in the İzmır Archaeological Museum). In the environs, a Lycian funerary monument of the 4th century BC with a sarcophagus on a podium (Taş Kule) and a rock-cut tomb contemporary with it (Şeytan Hamami).
