Modern Description: The road from Kastellia to Oinochori follows a river gorge, then turns right and climbs to a saddle. Visible on a hill overlooking the river is a Frankish tower, hence the local name Pyrgos. Approaching the hill from the N, one sees one corner of a circuit wall of massive rectangular blocks, the only surviving trace of a late Classical fortress thought to be the acropolis of Pindos, a city of the Dorian tetrapolis also known as Akyphas. Access to the summit is steep and slippery, and there is little to see except an oak tree that is gradually dismantling the medieval tower.
