Modern Description: The sanctuary of Zeus at Stratos was the religious and political centre of ancient Acarnania. The Doric temple of Zeus Stratios was built in the late 4th cent. B.C., measuring 34.47x15.41m., with 6 columns in each narrow side and 11 in the long ones. The temple comprised a pronaos, cella and opisthodomos. The roof was supported by eight inner columns. All columns were unfluted, an indication that the temple's construction was not finished. The great altar and bases of statues lie to the northeast of the temple.
