Modern Description: An unidentified Aitolian fortified acropolis has been located near the western bank of Acheloos river, ca. 2.5km. north of the modern village Spolaita. The acropolis lies on top of a hill called Paliokastro and had been -erroneously- identified with ancient Agrinio in the past; house remains and retaining walls can be seen iside the acropolis. The ancient fortification surrounds the top of an oval hill called 'Paliokastro'. Its length is ca. 800m. and is better preserved at the eastern and southern sides; 11 towers and at least 3 gates can be seen along the fortification.
An archaic sanctuary has been excavated by L. Kolonas outside the Paliokastro fortification, at the locality called Katsibireika.
