Modern Description: The dam of ancient Alyzia had been constructed near Varnakas, blocking a narrow passage of Varnakas' stream. The dam is an exceptional technical work of its time, unique for its size (25m. long and 14m. high). It was built to protect the plain of Alyzia from the danger of flooding and at the same time, it could provide water to a city of almost 10.000 people. The dam is probably a work of the late classical period (4th cent. B.C.), with some researchers dating as early as the Mycenean times, mainly due to its cyclopean construction.
