Modern Description: The harbour of the ancient city was located at Voulkos bay, west of Mytikas. Strabo refers to it as Hercules' sacred harbour and Thucydides talks of a temenos, 'Herakleion', dedicated to the hero. Ancient sources say that the monument had been decorated with works of Lysippos, the famous 4th cent. B.C. sculptor, depicting Hercules' trials. An unusual funerary monument of the late 2nd cent. A.D. was excavated at the site in 1919-1922 by K. Romaios, who thinks that the building material used for it came from the older Hercules' altar.
