Modern Description: Melanpagos (corrected by modern scholars to Melampagos), known from a series of boundary inscriptions, began as an Archaic sanctuary, marked by 6th c. Aeolic anta capitals, near a distinctive rock peak, and evolved into a fortified settlement controling a mountain road to Smyrna. Pottery finds suggest it was abandoned in the 2nd c. BC. Remains of several phases of defensive walls are preserved. (2013 paper by Sedat Akkurnaz)
