Modern Description: A natural double harbour in Locris, on the coast of the N Euboean gulf. The area was inhabited in the Bronze Age (3rd-2nd millennium BC). Part of the Cyclopean fortification survives.
The fortification of the city of historical times is quite well preserved (4th century BC and Hellenistic period), with square towers. On the seafront of the village of Larmes, near the factory, remains of the seawall with towers and the breakwaters of the ancient mole are visible. This was the location of Kato Larymna, while Ano Larymna is located at Pazaraki (2.5 km S), where a walled acropolis is preserved (4th or 3rd century BC).
Of the remains of harbour installations, probably from the reign of Justinian I (6th century), sections of the quay, constructed with large courses, the breakwater and port buildings are preserved.
