Modern Description: The fortified ancient city Phistyon has been identified with the ruins on top of Paliomonastiro hill, 1.5km. northwest of Neromana. The enclosure dates to the 5th cent. B.C. and is rather small, ca 250m., of which 160 are visible today. Three towers and one gate were incorporated in the eastern part of the wall, while the northern part features another two towers and the western part one more (five in total). Inside the fortification lies the Byzantine monastery of Aghioi Apostoloi. House ruins have been found inside the fortification and graves have come to light both within, as well as outside it. The sanctuary of Aphrodite Syria has been tentatively identified with the ruins ca. 2,5km. from Phistyon.
