Modern Description: Ancient Sauria has been identified with the ruins on the edge of Palaiomanina, next to the river Acheloos. The identification is based on the architectural features of the fortification and has not been documented archaeologically. The city is only mentioned once in ancient sources, by Diodorus Siculus, who mentions that the people of Oiniadai gathered here in 314 B.C., after Cassandros' call.
The city's fortification, with a separate acropolis, has a perimeter of 1.7km., with 11 towers and 5 gates. Within the city limits one can see scanty house ruins, as wel as part of a paved road leading to the riverside (northern) gate.
The acropolis was divided in two parts by an inner wall and incorporated eight rectangular towers and three gates. An inner gate connected the two parts. The peribolos had another three towers and two gates, leading to the nearby river. The fortification dates to the 5th cent. B.C.
