Modern Description: The people of ancient Alyzia (which is not naturally protected) built a fort, known as Kastri, on top of a rocky hill overlooking the Koboti-Archondochori road, ca 6km. from the ancient city. The fort served as a refuge in time of danger, as well as an observation point, controlling the entire plain of Alyzia and the sea ways between Kalamos and the acarnanian coast. The fort was built in the 5th or late 4th cent. B.C. Beside the main gate two monumental reliefs have been carved on the rock (one of Hercules and Athena and another of Asclepius and Hygeia). A large water reservoir has been carved in the rock, inside the fort.
