Modern Description: Situated on Mount Pelagia (ancient Ptoon), at an elevation of 370 m. It was an important cult centre of panhellenic fame, mainly in Archaic times (7th-6th century BC). The temple of Apollo (first phase Archaic, later Hellenistic), two parallel stoas, a hospice for pilgrims and the spring (Perdikovrysi) in which the faithful were purified and the god's oracles given, have been excavated. Numerous ex-votos, such as tripods, bronze objects and marble statues of Kouroi (in the National Museum, Athens and in the Thebes Museum) have been found.
At Kastraki, on the road from Acraephiae to Ptoon, remains of the small temple of the local healing hero Ptoos, whose cult existed before that of Apollo, have been brought to light.
