Modern Description: The site of the 5th c. temple of Artemis Aulidia is signposted from Vathy, but fenced and locked. The temple sits just inside Boiotian territory on a main land route from Chalkis. It adjoins a protected harbor. The temple foundations and the sacred spring across the street are visible through the fence. The temple is oriented to face the SE, possibly looking toward Delos, Artemis' birthplace. Beneath the floor of the 5th-century BC temple an 8th-century BC apsidal building was found with Geometric pottery. E of the temple is the roofed 'sacred fountain' with steps. SW a Hellenistic complex of pottery workshops (3rd-2nd century BC) has been brought to light and near these a hospice (îåíὼí).
In Late Roman times (4th century AD) baths were built in the area of the temple. The sanctuary was destroyed in AD 396, during the Goth incursions. Finds from it (such as statues of Artemis and Hekate) are exhibited in the Thebes Archaeological Museum.
