Modern Description: In Greek mythology Mt. Helicon was sacred to the Muses, who had a sanctuary in the valley of the Muses below. The modern name Elikonas is applied to a large, varied mountain chain running EW, with the highest peak Paliovouna at 1747 m. The modern name for the eastern summit, the one most closely associated with the Muses, is Zagaras (1525 m). The footpaths to the summit are steep and poorly marked. The famous Hippocrene spring is identified with a rock-lined well/cistern below the main summit.
