Modern Description: On the N-facing slope of Kefali promontory, above the defense installation, the cut-back rock face reveals the full height of the sanctuary of Artemis mentioned by Pausanias and discovered and excavated by Lolling in 1888. The shrine, probably for sailors, was open-air until a sanctuary building was erected in the 4th c. BCE. No trace remains of the more than life size statue of the goddess allegedly by Praxiteles.
