Modern Description:
Molykreion was a Corinthian colony near cape Rion. During the middle of the 5th century BCE the Athenians managed to put the city under their control. By the end of the century the Aetolians took control of the city. Important ancient ruins at Velvina - Helleniko, west of Naupaktos, have been tentatively identified with ancient Molykreio, a Corinthian colony lying between Naupaktos and Antirrio. The ruins spread on a long, narrow hill-top, encircled in ancient times by an enclosure. Within it stood a temple and a stoa, several unidentified buildings and a large water reservoir. The temple at Velvina acropolis seems to have been 'peripteral' (with colonnades in its perimeter), with pairs of columns at the front and back of the sekos and probably colonnades around the three sides of the interior. It seems that the building remained unfinished, either due to economic problems or because of bad planning. This temple was built in place of an older one, perhaps dedicated to Poseidon, who was worshiped at Molykreio. A stoa, north of the temple, may have served as a stone-workers' workshop, during the temple's construction. In 2014, excavators Nikos Kaltsas and Aliki Moustaka announced discovery of a small temple with statue base, aligned E-W, and a stadium with rows of stone seats.
