Modern Description: The Laphrion of Calydon, near the city's main gate, was one of the biggest Aitolian religious centers, featuring a gold and ivory statue of Artemis, work of the Sculptors Menaichmos and Soidas from Naupaktos. The cult here dates already from geometric times; in the late 7th cent B.C. the sanctuary comprised two temples dedicated to Artemis and Apollo. Parts of the decorated clay architectural members of the two buildings have been preserved. A major re-organization of the sanctuary took place in the mid-6th cent. B.C., when a new, much larger temple was built, partly of wood. Finally, around 400 B.C. wood was replaced by poros and marble. Apart from the temples, excavations in the sanctuary have brought to light a stoa and numerous statue bases. Dionysus was also worshiped in Calydon, but his sanctuary, northeast of Laphrion remains unexcavated
