Modern Description: Organized site, closed Tuesdays. The Roman baths at Aghios Thomas, not far from Mesolonghi, were known already in the 19th century, but were only excavated in 2001. This is a large T-shaped public bath complex, built in opus testaceum (rows of bricks). It comprises three distinct rooms, a large tank-pool (natatio) for cold bath (frigidarium), a central room with four built washing basins for warm bath (tepidarium) and a series of smaller rooms with bath tubs (alvei) for hot bath (caldarium). Beneath the latter wing were the hypocausta, which facilitated the circulation of hot air. Auxiliary rooms and water tanks were built around the main building, whose entrance was at its northern side. The baths were built probably in the 2nd cent. A.D. and were devastated by a powerful earthquake in 551 A.D. The area was then used as a cemetery.
