Modern Description:
The shipsheds at Oiniadai lie at the eastern part of the harbour, which was enclosed by a separate fortification. The monument, dug into the bedrock, is unique in shape and dimensions (47x41m.). It consists of six ramps where the ships were pulled out of the water, divided by five colonnades that supported the roof. The shipsheds were built in the early 4th cent. B.C., probably encouraged by the Athenians, and were used until the late 3rd cent. B.C. A partial reconstruction took place in the 2nd cent. B.C., using building material from the collapsed building and included only the northernmost ramp. In Roman times the area was used as a cemetery and in the Byzantine period it was used as a small fishing harbour. The monument was first -partialy- excavated by B. Powell in 1900-01 and, almost a century later, it was systematically excavated and fully uncovered, by L. Kolonas. Trismegistos Geo: 37640
