Modern Description: Oropos occupies a strategic coastal location on the contested border between Attica and Boeotia, overlooking the flood plain of the Asopos river. Several prehistoric sites and Mycenaean graves (3rd-2nd millennium BC) have been located on the surrounding hills. An important Early Iron Age (Geometric) settlement has been partly excavated on the W edge of the modern Skala Oropou, now the site of a secondary school complex. The excavator thinks it may have been the Homeric Graia. Hellenistic and Roman Oropos, attested by salvage excavations, lies underneath Skala Oropou. Ruins of an early Christian basilica on the shore have also been excavated. Classical tomb monuments and inscriptions have been reused in various churches, including the Koimesis Theotokou church on the W hill of modern Oropos.
