Modern Description:
Ancient scholion on Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonos: There are some who say the tomb of Oedipus is in the sanctuary of Demeter at Eteonos, with him having been brought from Keos, an insignificant hamlet, as Lysimachos the Alexandrian says Arizelos records in the 13th book of his Theban Affairs, writing as follows: "When Oedipus died and his friends intended to bury him in Thebes, the Thebans prevented them because of the prior disaster, since it would be impious. So they brought him to some place in Boeotia called Keos and buried him. When various misfortunes happened to the residents of the village, they assumed Oedipus' burial was the cause, and ordered his friends to remove him from the territory. At a loss for what to do, they dug him up and took him to Eteonos. They wanted to make his grave secretly, so they dug at night, not realizing they were digging in the sanctuary of Demeter. When it became evident, the residents of Eteonos sent to ask the God what to do. The god said not to move a suppliant of the goddess. For which reason he is buried there, and the sanctuary is called the Oedipodeion. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eteonus Wikidata ID: Q12877308 Trismegistos Geo: 61212 Manto: 9651937
