Modern Description: The excavator, Theodoros Spyropoulos, announced in 1972 that he had found a stepped pyramid or ziggurat covering the Bronze Age cist grave on the earth hill N of the Cadmeia of Thebes. Later scholars are skeptical. The site is unfenced and unimpressive. Pausanias described the tomb of Amphion and Zethos as a heap of dirt, not large, in that general area.
