Modern Description: A Thessalian and Athenian colony. Birthplace of the poet Anakreon. Teos is home to the largest temple of Dionysos in the ancient world. Ionic and peripteral, an early work of the architect Hermogenes (3rd-2nd century BC), it follows the plan of the temple of Athena at Priene. Teos was seat of a famous company (thiasos) of actors and theatre people ('the artisans around Dionysos'). Parts of the Archaic and Hellenistic city wall, the gymnasium, theatre and odeum have survived.
Excavations have shown that the settlement lived on into Early Christian times, but its population was reduced and it was in effect a large village.
