Modern Description: Coordinates courtesy of Mark Munn. On the eastern slopes of Mt Karoumbalo (865 m), about 4 km north-west of Gyphtokastro, are the remains of two square towers. The southeastern of the pair is 6.0 m square, preserved to a maximum height of 1.5 m in three courses. The second tower is 33 m northwest of the first, it measures 6.4 m square, preserved to only a single course of masonry identical to that of the southeast tower. The internal arrangements of the towers are obscure, due to their very ruinous conditions, but both were probably hollow; a mass of fallen blocks surrounds both towers. Numerous black-glazed rooftiles and considerable amounts of coarseware are scattered on the site, but no datable pottery has been found. The similarity of the masonry of the towers to that of the Gyphtokastro “citadel” suggests, however, that the towers were contemporary with the fort and should date to the second quarter of the fourth century. The northwestern tower encompasses a view of the west to the north- east over much of the southern Boeotian plain; Plataea is in view and the northern approaches to both passes over Kithairon are clearly visible. The two towers are intervisible. (Josiah Ober, Fortress Attica)
