- DARE

Modern Description: 100 m W of the modern (and ancient) road to Siphai/Aliki, in the ruins of a 4th c. enclosure, a flat, open field contains a very substantial threshold block and a few other blocks from a limestone temple probably oriented SE at 147° Two recut columns were inscribed (late 4th c. BCE?) 'Deinophila of Trochinidas to Artemis Agrotera, having seen a dream.' ( McCredie and Steinberg, Hesp. 29,2). The site has not been excavated, but surface finds suggest cult use from the late Geometric until the Hellenistic period. Surrounding the sanctuary is a 4th c. BCE enclosure wall (ca. 170 x 170 m) that may have served as a fortified Spartan camp in the early 4th c. (Tomlinson and Fossey, BSA 1970).
