Modern Description: Alyki, named for its large salt pond, is a pleasant beach resort on the N coast of the Gulf of Corinth, at the entry to Vathy bay. At the south end of the beach, a rocky spine runs down to the sea. Impressive 4th c. BCE fortifications, with two well-preserved gates and towers etc, follow the spine into the water and close off the area as a naval station. A monumental building on the south beachis mostly underwater, and other traces of harbor works survive. The official approach to the fortress atop the hill is via the road that skirts it on the N side. Where an enormous rock-fall (Feb. 2019) closes the road, a footpath with steps doubles back to the SW and leads eventually to the upper gate (some scrambling required).
