Modern Description: The ruins of ancient Keryneia have been identified on the hill called Vouni, north of Mamousia. The city flourished during the Hellenistic period, when it became part of the Achaean league (in 276 B.C.). The visible ruins of the ancient city date to that period. On a saddle at the foot of the hill, near a church of Ag. Konstantinos, a unique heroon of the 3rd cent. B.C. has been excavated, with an elaborate facade of engaged columns. This site is fenced and locked. A signpost with a site plan, placed shortly before the heroon, marks a track leading up to the major surviving monuments of the fortified city. Those include part of the fortification, the theatre, ruins of various public buildings and private houses and a water fountain near the city gate. The path ultimately joins a dirt track leading E to the excavated foundations of a sanctuary dating to the 6th-4th cent. BCE just N of a chapel of Profitis Ilias.
