Modern Description: A bothros (deposit) dating to the geometric / archaic period was found at Achnari locality, near Rakita, in 1972. The ensuing excavation has brought to light an apsidal 'peripteros' temple, its entrance having the form of a 'prostoon' with five pillars. The temple dates to the late geometric period (725-690 B.C) and had a 5th c. mirror dedicated to Artemis Aontia (Fαοντιαι Αρτεμιδι); Apollo was possibly worshiped here as well.
The sanctuary was in use from the 8th cent. B.C. to the late classical period (4th cent. B.C.), when it was destroyed by an earthquake, apparently the same one that devastated the archaic cities of Helike and Voura in 373 B.C.
