Modern Description: Patra's Roman Odeon is among the most important monuments of its kind in, built by Herodes Atticus in the 1st cent. A.D. Its uncovering began at the end of the 19th century, but was concluded, after successive acquisitions of land and excavations, in the 1950s. The monument's current form was the result of extensive restoration carried out during the 1950-60s.
Pausanias lists the Odeon second only to Athens' Odeon of Herodes Atticus, which was a little later in date. The auditorium, with an estimated capacity of ca. 2.500 spectators, was covered with marble. The rest of the building was constructed by double (inner-outer) brickwalls with stones filling the space between them. The monument's size indicated that it was probably fully roofed, though this has not been proven by the excavation.
