Modern Description: In the area near the ancient acropolis a Middle Helladic tumulus (2000-1600 BC) with cist graves, pits and burial pithoi has been located.
The hill rising to the N of the Marathon marsh, on the Kapandriti-Varnavas road, quite a short distance from Rhamnus and the sea, was called Aphidnae. On its summit are scant remains of a Classical fort (4th century BC) with one tower. Visible on the slopes of the hill are the foundations of houses built on terraces.
