Modern Description: The ancient deme of Acharnae was the most densely populated and one of the most important in Attica. In 2007 at Salaminos 21 in Acharnes several rows of seats were found from a classical theatre/sanctuary of Dionysos (in 2014 backfilled awaiting expropriation of neighboring lots). The nucleus of the settlement was located on a hill W of Menidi, at the foot of Mount Parnis. This was also the original site of the Classical Doric temple of Ares (450/440 BC), remains of which are preserved in the Athenian Agora, whence it was transferred in toto and re-erected during the reign of the Roman emperor Augustus (31 BC-AD 14).
