Modern Description: An impressive marble lion, dated on stylistic grounds to the 4th century BCE and assumed to be the tomb monument of an important person, long lay exposed outside the 16th c. church of Ag. Nikolaos Leontariou. It is now displayed under a protective roof. The Leontari neighborhood takes its name from the find. Excavations have revealed a 12th c. monastery church and other buildings under the present one.
