Modern Description: Where the paved road from Kaisariani to the summit of Mt. Hymettos reaches the prominent saddle with views E, a well-marked but rocky footpath (on the Athens side) heads N to the prominent Korakovouni summit (726m), about 10 minutes. On that summit, marked by a prominent modern cairn, is a circular rubble platform, 8 m. in diameter, mostly collapsed. The Classical pottery and painted rooftiles observed by James Macredie (Fortified Military Camps in Attica, 1966) are no longer in evidence. Strictly speaking, this is not a defensive tower -- there is nothing to defend here -- but a φρυκτώριον, a lookout/beacon platform capable of relaying warnings from the whole SE coast of Athens and beyond. The views are superb.
