Modern Description: A row of stone sockets for posts was found in the Panathenaic way surface of the 5th c. BCE just E of the altar of the Twelve Gods; they were called the starting line of a racecourse. In excavations under the railroad tracks, however, more of the posts were found, making it clear that this was a rectangular enclosure ca. 12 x 15 m. The theory of the excavators is that this was the Perischoinisma, or roped-off enclosure. John Camp, Hesperia 84.3. It might have been used during ostracism voting.
[Judith Binder: Perischoinisma: roped off place in the Agora: Plu. Moralia 837 A; Agora_III, nos. 529-536; at the orchestra site, Kolb, F. 1981, 53-54]
