Modern Description: Sanctuary created probably on the N slope of the Acropolis for the cult of Theseus in connection with the return of Theseus' bones from Skyros after its conquest by Kimon ca. 476 BCE. Not yet found. There may have been another sanctuary of Theseus elsewhere large enough for a muster of soldiers. The Hephaisteion temple was long thought to be the Theseion, because the deeds of Theseus figure in the metope sculpture.
