Modern Description: "Referred to in earlier scholarship as the ""Dipylon above the gates"" on the basis of a misunderstanding of IG II2 463 lines 52-4: the southernmost and most important gate of the Diateichisma located opposite the church of Agios Demetrios Loumbardiares (307/6 BC). East of the gate is a shrine dedicated to Heracles or Aias, Athena, and Demos as protectors of the gate and Melite deme.
[Judith Binder: Diateichisma: Gate at Hag. Dimitrios Loumbardiaris in the saddle between the Pnyx Hill and the Mouseion Hill: [mistakenly] equated with the Dipylon-above-the-gates mentioned in IG II² 463 line 53, Thompson, H. A. and R. L. Scranton 1943, 312-324, 352-356, 367-372, 376-378, figs. 28-34, pl. 14; [mistakenly] identified as the Dipylon-above-the-gates, Travlos, J. 1971, 160-161, Gate XIV, figs. 28, 219; cf. Dipylon Gate]
Trismegistos Geo: 364"
